Merry Christmas from Pastor Gary

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Dear Lauderdale United Methodist Church Family & Friends,

A cartoon from a few years ago showed a woman saying to her husband, “Good grief, Henry. Here’s Christmas at our throats again!”

Amid the preparations for Christmas each year, there always seem to be a few voices like hers, proclaiming a “Bah, humbug!” on the whole business. And if the truth be known, some of us may feel less than excited about Christmas ourselves. The expense, the crowds, the overindulgence, the hurried schedules and all the other trappings of modern Christmas celebrations are enough to make all of us to have a Scrooge look at the season.

In the face of the humbug state of affairs, it is helpful to remember that God did not send Jesus to be “at our throats,” but to be “in our hearts.” The difference between those two concepts defines the gap between gloom and glory. There’s a reason we call the gospel good news. As John so aptly put it, “For God sent the Son into the world, not to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him” (3:17).

Jesus is God’s gift to our world — and to our hearts. When Jesus resides within, whether we enjoy or merely tolerate the flurry of seasonal preparations, Christmas itself is a grand opportunity to say thank you to God for the gift of the Son.

My Prayer for you is that you and your family have a Blessed Christmas and remember to let Christ be the center of your life.

In God’s peace & Merry Christmas,

O Holy Night!

Posted by: | Comments (0)

The Advent and Christmas season is just a few days away…  My favorite time of the year is the time where we look forward to the celebration of the birth of Jesus.  The music of the season brings so much joy and hope to the Christian heart that I really never stop listening to it.  It often causes my family to give me scared looks, but Christmas can happen at any time in my musical collection.

Speaking of Christmas…  The Sanctuary Choir has been working hard to polish the Christmas Cantata that is being presented this year.  The music in this year’s program is full to the rim of His love and truth.  I hope that each of you comes expecting a blessing and we certainly hope that you bring someone with you who needs to hear about the love of Jesus.   Come and receive a blessing as we celebrate that Holy Night!

Advent Study

Our Advent Study begins on Wednesday, December 1, 2010 and continues for three consecutive Wednesday – December 8, 15 and 22.  The session will begin at 10:00 a.m. and conclude at 11:30 a.m.  Following each session, we will enjoy a “brown bag” lunch (each person brings their own) and rich fellowship as we sit around the table and share conversation and food.  For the Study, we will be using J. Ellsworth Kalas’ book, Best Sings Come At Night.  The books are $7.00 each.  The teachers are Ginger and Jimmy Harrison. Please join us. Sign up now by emailing with the following information and pay for your book the next Sunday or Wednesday when you are at church.
